NFL general managers (GM) have a wide range of responsibilities in overseeing a team’s operations and personnel decisions.

Some key duties of an NFL GM include:

  1. Player personnel decisions – The GM coordinates the scouting department and has the final say on which players the team drafts, signs as free agents, trades for, or releases.
  2. Contract negotiations – The GM negotiates and structures contracts with players, working within the constraints of the NFL salary cap.
  3. Hiring/firing coaching staff – The GM usually has the authority to hire and fire the head coach and assistant coaches.
  4. Building the team’s roster – GMs decide which players to keep, cut or trade while trying to construct the best possible 53-man roster.
  5. Setting the vision – GMs work with the team president/owner to define the organizational philosophy and long-term plan for the franchise.
  6. Managing football operations staff – The GM oversees personnel like scouts, trainers, equipment managers and other support staff.
  7. Handling discipline – Enforcing team rules, handing out fines and suspensions falls under the GM’s responsibilities.
  8. Managing the salary cap – GMs must construct the roster while remaining compliant with the league’s salary cap rules.
