A pivotal moment came in 1991 when the Sun Belt merged with the American South Conference, retaining the Sun Belt name despite being the smaller of the two leagues.

Currently comprising 14 member institutions, the SBC has evolved from its original focus to become a multi-sport conference. Its journey includes exploring football sponsorship in the early 1990s, a move that would eventually reshape the conference’s identity and competitive landscape in collegiate athletics.
