Sun Belt Conference
The Sun Belt Conference (SBC) is a Division I collegiate athletic league in the Southern United States, established in 1976. Initially a non-football conference, it began sponsoring football in 2001, competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
The SBC has undergone significant changes since its founding. It started with six members and expanded over time, experiencing both growth and departures. A pivotal moment came in 1991 when the Sun Belt merged with the American South Conference, retaining the Sun Belt name despite being the smaller of the two leagues.
Currently comprising 14 member institutions, the SBC has evolved from its original focus to become a multi-sport conference. Its journey includes exploring football sponsorship in the early 1990s, a move that would eventually reshape the conference’s identity and competitive landscape in collegiate athletics.
