Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is a prominent NCAA Division I athletic league comprising historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southern United States. Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, the SWAC competes in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) for football.

Recognized as the leading HBCU conference, the SWAC is renowned for its high number of alumni in professional sports, especially football. It consistently leads FCS-level NCAA football in average home attendance, nearly reaching one million fans in 1994.

The SWAC’s success in attracting spectators underscores its significance in collegiate athletics, particularly within the HBCU landscape. This popularity, combined with its track record of producing professional athletes, positions the SWAC as a key player in both HBCU and broader collegiate sports spheres.

The conference continues to balance athletic excellence with the unique cultural and educational missions of its member institutions, contributing to the diverse tapestry of American college athletics.
