Pioneer Football League

The Pioneer Football League (PFL) is a unique Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conference in the United States. It stands out for two key reasons:

  1. It’s a football-only conference, with members spanning from New York to California.
  2. Unlike most FCS conferences, PFL schools do not offer athletic scholarships for football.

Headquartered in St. Louis, the PFL mostly comprises private institutions, with Morehead State University being the sole public school member. This wide geographic spread and commitment to non-scholarship football create a distinctive competitive environment within NCAA Division I.

The PFL’s structure allows member institutions to compete at the Division I level in football while maintaining a focus on academics and non-athletic financial aid, offering a different model of collegiate athletics compared to scholarship-granting conferences.
