Houston Gamblers
This page will cover the many variations of the Houston Gamblers team dating back as far as the mid-80’s.
While the writing here is tightly focused on the modern UFL, it would be a disservice to not explore the historical context of such a prolific and resilient team.

USFL Houston Gamblers (1984-1985)
The Gamblers entered the USFL as one of six expansion teams for the league’s second season in 1984.
The original Houston Gamblers team is credited with the introduction of the “run and shoot” offense to the world of pro football.
Led by QB Jim Kelly, the team set the league’s single-season scoring record in 1984 with 618 points averaging over 34 points per game.
In their two seasons, the Gamblers did reach the playoffs but faced first-round defeats both times.
Coaches Darrell “Mouse” Davis (1984) and John Jenkins (1985) both leveraged the Run N’ Shoot offense to national media attention with the latter bringing a bit more complexity and excitement during his run.
The Run N’ Shoot offense was designed to utilize good synergy between the quarterback and receivers along with extensive receiver motion and on-the-fly route adjustments.

Of the six new expansions, only the Gamblers posted a winning record and advanced to the playoffs. A combination of key injuries, league-wide turmoil and local financial troubles short-circuited the Gamblers’ run at the end of their second season.
