The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is an organization dedicated to supporting college athletes. It has over 1,100 member schools across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Each year, NCAA schools provide $3.5 billion in athletic scholarships to help students afford their education.

Over 500,000 college athletes compete through the NCAA across 24 different sports. The goal for many athletes is to make it to one of the NCAA’s 90 championship events held each year. These championships determine the best teams and athletes at different levels of competition.

Within the NCAA, there are different divisions for football. The highest level is Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), which had 134 schools in 10 conferences as of 2024. The next highest is Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) with 129 teams across 13 conferences in 2024.

The NCAA aims to help college athletes succeed both academically and athletically during their time as students. Its championships showcase the talents of these student-athletes from schools nationwide.
